ZEEBRUGGE MAY 2014

CHAINPORT 1ST GLOBAL ALLIANCE OF SEAPORTS LAUNCHED

At a meeting in Bruges, Belgium, The Global Institute of Logistics launched the CHAINPORT Alliance together with its founding members: Port of Zeebrugge, Port of Shenzhen, Port of Virginia, Port of Tenerife and Port of Cork

Member ports will combine to form a global network through which knowledge is shared, best practice is adopted and trade developed. The launch marks the beginning of the recruitment process for 44 member ports from around the world which will make up this alliance.

CHAINPORT’s mission is to establish a long-term partnership of global seaports to enhance competitive advantages by sharing risks and resources, extend market access capability, improve product quality and customer service, and ultimately, increase profitability.
A new model is emerging at international ports that focuses on integrated thinking across all aspects of the port community and the greater supply chain. In this role, the port is considered part of a community in which different logistics and transport operators are involved in bringing value to the end users. The Global Institute of Logistics has developed CHAINPORT, a collaborative platform that best serves the needs both of Port operators and their end users.A shared vision will break down ‘silo’-based thinking to be replaced by collaboration and cohesion to maximize efficiency and minimize cost. This vision needs to be spearheaded by a ‘champion’ of the supply chain collaboration model, and complemented by a committee with representatives from all port stakeholders.

“Historically ports were measured on their ability to accommodate ships and other modes of transport effectively and efficiently. However, increased international trade and the global economic environment have given rise to a new breed of customers who demand optimum flexibility, efficiency and transparency in their dealings with ports. These customers see the port as a combined whole and expect coordination, communication and control amongst port stakeholders. In essence, a port is only as strong as its weakest link. Its reputation depends on its ability to engage with its community.”

Kieran Ring, CEO of the Global Institute of Logistics

CHAINPORT works with shipping lines on operational efficiency programs to reduce vessel time at port and provides its members with best practice in management, operation, logistics and development strategy. This keeps carrier costs down and improves service reliability, reinstating the port as a key facilitator in the international logistics network.
